Premium moving services in Amsterdam
Moving company Amsterdam
• Same-day quote • Insured up to €2.5 million
• No call-out charges and no weekend surcharge
Holland Movers has its own Amsterdam branch at H.J.E. Wenckebachweg 159, 1096 AM Amsterdam, and carries out around 110 moves per month in the city. That is also where the company started, in 1973. Moving here is different from moving anywhere else in the Netherlands: narrow streets, canals, steep staircases and paid parking on almost every corner. We plan around all four.
Why choose Holland Movers as your moving company in Amsterdam?
- You pay no call-out charges and no return charges, anywhere in the Netherlands.
- Your belongings are insured up to 2.5 million euros, with no excess. That cover is unique in the moving industry.
- We drive box trucks rather than large lorries, so we reach the canal belt and the narrow streets of the Jordaan where bigger vehicles get stuck.
- Our own moving lift for upper-floor addresses, as part of your move.
- Our movers speak English and work with internationals every week.
- Moving on a Saturday or Sunday is possible, with no weekend surcharge.
Our own Amsterdam branch and the neighbourhoods we work in
Because our teams and equipment are based in the city, we know it street by street: the canal belt, the narrow stairwells of Oud-West, De Pijp and the Jordaan, the loading restrictions in the centre, the spacious apartments and villas of Amsterdam Zuid and Buitenveldert, and the apartment blocks in Noord, Zuidoost and IJburg.
Working here every week means we plan around the details that slow a move down: where the moving lift can stand, when the street is quietest, and how to get a wardrobe out of a fourth-floor flat without damage. You can reach our Amsterdam branch directly on 020 260 2608.
How long does a move in Amsterdam take?
Most of our moves in Amsterdam take 6 to 8 hours and are finished in one day. Moving from a ground-floor home with parking in front of the door is considerably quicker than from a third-floor flat without a lift.
The volume of your inventory, the presence of large furniture and the distance between the two addresses all influence the duration, and so does whether you pack yourself or have us do it. You receive a clear estimate of the expected duration with your quote, and because you pay for the hours actually worked you keep control of the total.
What does a move in Amsterdam cost?
A move in Amsterdam with Holland Movers usually costs between 1,000 and 2,000 euros. A studio can be less, a family house with packing more. We work by the hours actually worked, so accessibility is what moves the price: the floor you live on, the presence of a lift and where the truck can stand.
Below are five examples of moves we carry out in and around Amsterdam, with the home, the team and the amount. They give you a better feel for the price than a calculator does.
| Example move | Home and access | Team and duration | Indication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Studio in De Pijp to a one-bedroom flat in Oud-West | 40 m², second floor, no lift, moving lift used | 2 movers, 4 hours | €750 |
| Two-bedroom flat in Amsterdam Zuid to a family flat in Buitenveldert | 80 m², lift at both addresses, reserved bays | 3 movers, 5.5 hours | €1,150 |
| Canal house in the Jordaan to a new build in IJburg | 95 m², steep stairs, moving lift at the old address | 4 movers, 8 hours | €1,750 |
| Family flat in Amsterdam Zuid to Amstelveen, full service with packing | 120 m², packed the day before | 4 movers, 2 days | €2,700 |
| Family home in Buitenveldert to Germany | 140 m², international, in our own vehicles | 4 movers, 3 days | €3,800 |
Recognise your own situation in one of these? Then that indication is close. Your advisor confirms the exact amount during the free survey.
Amsterdam moving costs per type of home
These are the indications we work with across the city. The duration determines the amount, which is why a canal house without a lift sits at the top of the range and a new build with a lift at the bottom.
| Type of home | Duration | Indication |
|---|---|---|
| Studio or one-bedroom flat | 3 to 4 hours | €600 to €850 |
| Two-bedroom flat | 4 to 6 hours | €850 to €1,200 |
| Three-bedroom flat with lift | 6 to 8 hours | €1,200 to €1,700 |
| Family house | 7 to 9 hours | €1,500 to €2,000 |
| Detached house | from 8 hours | from €2,000 |
Your personal moving advisor confirms the exact amount during the free survey, so nothing is added afterwards.
Parking permits and loading restrictions in Amsterdam
Parking is the single most underestimated part of an Amsterdam move. Almost the entire city has paid parking, many streets in the centre have limited access windows, and a moving truck that cannot stand near the door adds hours to the day.
For a move you can apply to the gemeente Amsterdam for a parking exemption or a reserved space. We advise you on where the truck and the moving lift can stand, how much space to reserve and which time slot works best in your street, and we build it into the planning.
- Reserve a loading spot or parking exemption in time.
- Check access windows and bollards in the centre and the canal belt.
- Allow room for the moving lift at upper-floor addresses.
- Take tram tracks, bridges and narrow quays into account.
Your personal moving advisor and the free survey
Every move starts with a free survey, at your home or online, with the advisor who stays your contact throughout. Together you go through the rooms, the access and the date, and you receive a transparent, itemised quote with no hidden costs.
With our local experience we spot the problems before they arise: the turn in the stairwell that a sofa will not make, the street where the truck cannot stand, the lift that has to be booked with the building manager. Solving those on paper is a great deal cheaper than solving them on the day.
Insured up to 2.5 million euros, without excess
Your belongings are insured up to 2.5 million euros with no excess during the move. That cover applies as standard, you do not arrange or pay for it separately, and it is unique in the Dutch moving industry.
The people carrying your furniture are our own trained movers. They work with furniture blankets, edge protection and floor covering, and they are used to items whose value is not financial: heirlooms, artwork, a piano, a full display cabinet.
Full service moving in Amsterdam, from A to Z
With full service you do not lift anything at all. We deliver the packing materials, pack every room and label the boxes per room, take apart what needs taking apart, transport it, rebuild it at your new address and unpack the boxes again. Your beds are made up and your kitchen is usable the same evening.
You can also choose parts of it. Many Amsterdam clients have us pack the kitchen and the fragile items and do the rest themselves. Our handyman service takes down a fitted wardrobe or remounts your TV on the day itself.
Storage in and around Amsterdam
Amsterdam moves often have a gap: the new key comes later, a renovation runs on, or you move into a smaller place first. Our storage bridges it. We collect your belongings, keep them in our own secured and insured facility and deliver them to your new address when you are ready, so you only handle your move once.
Your inventory stays in the same crates and blankets it was loaded in, and the same team brings it over. More about moving and storage.
Senior moves in Amsterdam
Moving to a smaller flat or a care residence asks for a different pace. We work in the order that keeps the day calm: the bedroom and the bathroom first, so there is a made bed and a working bathroom before anything else is unpacked.
We hang the pictures back in the same arrangement, reconnect the television and take away what is not coming along. Family often lives elsewhere, so we keep one contact person informed throughout the day. See our senior relocation.
When do you need a moving lift in Amsterdam?
In this city a moving lift is often a necessity rather than a luxury. You generally need one from the second floor upwards, or when large furniture cannot be manoeuvred safely through the stairwell. In the older buildings of the centre, Oud-West and De Pijp that is the rule rather than the exception.
It is also the cheaper option. Because you pay for the hours worked, moving a wardrobe through the window instead of down four flights of stairs saves both time and risk. The moving lift is planned as part of your move, so you do not have to arrange it separately.
Packing service and moving boxes in Amsterdam
You can rent boxes and packing materials from us, or have us pack everything. A two-person household needs around 30 to 40 boxes; a family home 60 or more. We deliver them before the move and collect them afterwards, so you are not left with a hallway full of cardboard.
Glassware, artwork and electronics go into materials made for them rather than into newspaper. More about our packing service.
Requesting your Amsterdam move in four steps
There are two routes, and they are separate. Request a moving quote and you receive an indication the same day. Or book a free moving survey, at your home or online, and we go through everything with you first.
After that it is four steps: the survey, your itemised quote, the confirmation of the date, and the move itself. You keep the same advisor throughout, and changes to the date, the volume or the equipment are possible at any stage.
- A quote the same day.
- No call-out charges and no return charges.
- Insured up to 2.5 million euros with no excess.
- A personal moving advisor from start to finish.
- Very flexible in changing your moving day.
- No weekend surcharge.
Office and business moves in Amsterdam
We move offices, laboratories, shops and hotels, usually outside opening hours so your business keeps running. In the centre and on the Zuidas that means working around access windows, loading bays and building management rules.
You get one project contact, a floor plan per workstation and labelled crates, so your people can start working again the next morning. More on business relocation.
Why clients in Amsterdam choose Holland Movers
Because we are flexible where it counts and fixed where it matters. The moving date, the volume of your belongings and the equipment can change at any stage of the relocation. The insurance cover, the absence of call-out charges and the team you were promised do not.
Holland Movers is rated 4.6 out of 5 based on more than 650 Google reviews, and has been moving households in this city since 1973. You can read a selection of those reviews higher up this page.
Moving abroad from Amsterdam
As international movers we carry out around 400 moves a year, almost all of them within Europe and all of them in our own vehicles. Your belongings are never transferred into a container or handed to a foreign partner along the way: the team that loads in Amsterdam also unloads.
An international move from Amsterdam starts at around 3,000 euros and is quoted as a fixed price, because the route and the volume are known in advance. Popular destinations from here are moving to Germany, moving to Belgium and moving to France.
Moving within Amsterdam
Most of our Amsterdam work is people moving from one part of the city to another: a studio in De Pijp to a family flat in Amsterdam Zuid, a canal house in the Jordaan to a newer build in IJburg, or a townhouse in Buitenveldert to a larger home elsewhere in the city.
Within the city the distance is rarely the problem. The stairs, the door widths and the parking are. We plan a local move around exactly those points: which items go through the window with the moving lift, where the truck can stand, and at what time of day the street is workable.
Good preparation is key to a smooth move. To make sure you don’t forget anything, download our moving checklist with useful tips and practical information for your moving day.
Moving to Amsterdam as an expat: your first weeks
Holland Movers carries out around 110 moves per month in Amsterdam. Our depot is on the H.J.E. Wenckebachweg in Amsterdam East, which is also where the company started. A large share of that work is for internationals arriving in the city or moving to their permanent home once their contract is confirmed.
Register with the municipality
You must register your new address with the municipality. You can do so from four weeks before your moving date and no later than five days after. Register later and the municipality uses the date of your notification as your official moving date, which can affect your benefits, your local taxes and your parking permit. Municipalities may also impose a fine of up to 325 euros.
If you are moving to the Netherlands for the first time and will stay longer than four months, you register in the Personal Records Database and receive your citizen service number, the BSN. Staying for less than four months? Then you can request a BSN through the Non-residents Records Database instead. Bring a valid passport, and a rental or purchase contract for your new address. If you are moving in with someone, you also need a signed consent form from the main occupant with a copy of their ID.
Already living in the Netherlands and moving again?
Many internationals arrive in a temporary flat and move to a permanent home within a year or two. If you move to a different municipality, you only register with the new one: it automatically deregisters you from the old one. You never have to deregister yourself, unless you are leaving the country.
We handle these moves in the same way as any other, with no call-out charges and no return charges wherever in the Netherlands you go. Full details are on our page about change of address.
Moving to Amsterdam from elsewhere
Arriving from another city or from abroad? Alongside the move there is admin: you register your address with the gemeente Amsterdam, and if you come from abroad you make an appointment to register and receive your BSN.
Our English-speaking teams work with internationals every week, many of them moving into Amsterdam Zuid, Buitenveldert and the Zuidas area, and we plan the move around your arrival date and any temporary housing. See how to report your change of address.
Moving from Amsterdam to another city
Leaving the capital? We move households from Amsterdam to anywhere in the Netherlands, and the distance is simply added to the calculation. There are no call-out or return charges, so you pay for the move itself rather than for us getting there.
The routes we drive most from Amsterdam are to moving company Utrecht, moving company Rotterdam, moving company The Hague, moving company Haarlem and moving company Amstelveen.
Where internationals live in Amsterdam
Most of our international clients end up in a handful of areas, and each one moves differently.
Amsterdam Zuid and Buitenveldert
This is where the majority of expat families settle, close to the Zuidas business district and the international schools. The buildings are largely well kept flats with lifts, which makes the move itself straightforward. The bottleneck is parking: almost every street requires reserved bays.
The canal belt, the Jordaan and Oud-West
Beautiful to live in, demanding to move into. The staircases are narrow and steep, the turns are tight and a wardrobe rarely fits. We measure the stairs and the window frame during the survey and bring a moving lift when needed, as part of the move rather than as an extra you have to arrange.
IJburg and the eastern docklands
Newer housing with lifts and wider streets, but more belongings per household and often a fixed handover date for a new build. There we plan around the key handover rather than around the logistics.
Moving service Amsterdam
Private relocation
Every move is different, so we plan yours around your home rather than around a standard package. From a studio to a family house, our team goes through the rooms, the access and the date with you in advance, and the same crew carries out the move from the first box to the last screw.
International moving
We carry out around 400 international moves a year, almost all of them within Europe. Your belongings travel in our own vehicles and are never transferred into a container or handed to a foreign partner along the way, so the team that loads in Amsterdam is the team that unloads at your new address.
Handyman service
A fitted wardrobe that has to come apart, a window frame that has to come out, a television that needs remounting. Our handyman does that on the moving day itself, so you are not waiting for a second appointment with someone else.
Moving lift
When a wardrobe or a sofa will not fit down the stairs, we move it through the window with our own moving lift. Your advisor measures the stairwell and the window frame during the survey and decides then whether the lift is needed, so it is planned rather than improvised.
Emergency relocation
A move at short notice because of a sale that went through quickly, a job that starts sooner than expected or a landlord who needs the keys. We keep capacity free for urgent work and can often start within a few days in Amsterdam.
Business relocation
Offices, laboratories, shops and hotels, usually outside opening hours so your business keeps running. You get one project contact, a floor plan per workstation and labelled crates, so your people can start working again the next morning.
Storage
If the dates of your old and new address do not line up, we store your belongings in our own secure storage. Your inventory stays in the same crates and blankets it was loaded in, and the same team brings it over when you are ready.
Packing service
We pack every room for you, label the boxes per room and unpack them again at your new address. Glassware, artwork and electronics go into materials made for them rather than into newspaper. You can also have us pack only the kitchen and the fragile items.
Senior relocation
Moving to a smaller home or a care residence asks for a different pace. We start with the bedroom and the bathroom, so there is a made bed and a working bathroom before anything else is unpacked, and we hang the pictures back in the same arrangement.
House clearance
Clearing a home completely, after a move or after a death, with reuse and proper disposal of what is left behind. We hand the property over broom clean and provide the documentation the landlord or the estate agent asks for.
